Nerd News 2.0 by John on April 3, 2006 @ 11:14 PM

Nerd News is back with the vengeance of a pubescent male who thinks that playing The Sims 2 will give him hints on how to get a girlfriend! I found a lot of shiat this week, some in the "WTF" category, and others that may make some people cry. But enough with the intro crap… ON WITH THE NERDY-NESS!

Let us first get the "WTF" out of the way. As most of you know, part of today's "pop-culture" is to see who can have the most god-awful, shiny, fucked-up rims on their car. Well I found some rims that will appeal to the Nerd Pimps out there or Nimps as they're called by the Homers… uh I mean Homies. These people put LEDs in their rims and wrote a program to get them to display any picture you want in the rim while they're spinning. I got two links of this one for you: ne kinda explains about the rims and the other is actually a movie of them in action. And on a side note, this is the kind of link I used to send Matt over AIM everyday. This might explain why he no longer talks to me.

Next up… it's time for one of my favorite past times, Microsoft bashing!! So as some of you may know Windows Vista has been delayed until 2007. This apparently pissed off A LOT of Microsoft employees, who were screaming for a major restructure of the upper management, as reported by Slashdot. Also rumor has it that Vista is getting a 60% code rewrite, and anyone who knows programming knows this is a major pain in the ass! Engadget has this link for us, along with the standard Microshaft denial at the bottom of the page. Who to believe? We all know that Microshaft never lies to us!

Alright let's jump off the computer track for a second here. Space X, the first privately funded space agency, launched their first rocket and satellite. Unfortunately they did not have a very good engine test, as it exploded and destroyed the entire mission. Apparently NASA's job isn't so easy to do eh?

Alright one last non computer thing I found, rumors are going around that we may have a real holographic drive launching this year! It's just a next generation hard drive basically, storing information in a third dimensional space as opposed to the two dimensions that we have today. The only thing is, right now it's using the weaker red laser to read and write information. However, they will eventually upgrade to blue and green lasers that will give us more speed and more room! w00t! Gizmodo's got this one for us.

Alright on to some more computer hardware. As some of you may know, Intel not too long ago said they were going to launch a Quad Core processor and that AMD had made no announcements in regards to this. However AMD apparently just doesn't have as big of a mouth as Intel, as they are launching their own Quad Core processor at the same time as Intel. What does this mean for you and me? Well we'll be getting a really fast CPU, that's probably going to launch for a lot of money, but that will also drive down the prices of the really fast CPUs we have on the market today. Basically a Quad Core CPU has 4 little "cores" or 4 areas that can process things at one time except it's all in one chip. I am very excited about this as I've been a fan of AMD processors for years, and they finally have the majority market share of processor sells! Again Gizmodo's got my info on this one.

Alright, now for some news on the PlayStation3! I don't know how much you guys have been keeping up on this, but a lot of people hated the controller design Sony has been showing off for the PS3. Well they just announced that they are scrapping that design and the new one will be released at E3 this year. Side note: I really HATE the design that Engadget drew up. Also one of the biggest things I've heard in console gaming in a while: the PlayStation3 will ship region free! This means that you can play games bought in Japan on your PS3 you bought in America legally and without mod chips or anything. This is huge, as no one has ever done this before. However, the movie play back feature of the PS3 will be region restricted. Check out the write up from GameSpot.

I just found some news on the Nintendo Revolution. Apparently IGN.com has found out that console hoped to save Nintendo in the market may not run as fast as they're saying, if you go off of numbers anyway. The specs for the system are actually slightly slower than the original X-Box, could Nintendo have found way to get this older hardware to look as nice as the new stuff the X-box 360 and PS3 are running?I guess we'll have to wait and see won't we?

Also on a sadder note, Sony has stopped all production of the PlayStation One. I cannot remember the link for this, but the console that changed gaming as we know it has finally stopped any all production. REST IN PEACE!

Aight my peeps - I'm outta here! I'll have more nerdy-ness for you all next week!.
